IOM Provides Reintegration Support to Victims of Trafficking in Persons

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) countertrafficking and reintegration of victims team paid visits in Northeastern Bulgaria to meet survivors and monitor their adaptation upon return. The team traveled over 600 km between September 16th and 18th to visit 11 persons, victims of labor exploitation and forced begging. IOM Bulgaria supported majority of survivors to return to Bulgaria from Sweden and other European countries, as well as provided them with funds for daily needs, food, utility rent, home furniture and refurbishment. IOM Bulgaria countertrafficking team also covers health insurance payments for victims of trafficking and is supporting enrolment in education and vocational training courses.

„To make a living here is difficult, but at least we are not forced by anyone”, survivors say.

In the period from 2017 to 2020, IOM Bulgaria has supported 258 victims of trafficking, of whom 132 received return support and 98 people got reintegration support.
